Roughs-doodles-I'm busier than it looks

I got more of the RPG illustration assignments. Have to do those kinda quick. Super roughs done while I was waiting for a haircut. I also accepted money for more Ms Valkyrie comic page art. That is hard work. Not made any easier by my imac cintiq setup being nuked. I have to table that strip based on the poem until I'm done with the paying work.

 Roughing out the RPG work

I was watching someone else draw and paint in photoshop. Saw them rotating the image instantly to make their strokes easier .
"How you do that!"
Found it on youtube. Shared toobar presence with the hand tool.
R hotkey.
The doodle above was a joy to do hatching from every angle.
Personal Game changer for inking in photoshop.
Especially with the cintiq no longer usable as a second monitor.
I can use it as the single monitor, but believe me, it's not fun. Too small.
I did these as I listened to Gentlemen Broncos and Get Shorty on the Listen to a Movie web site.
Color next. Then I have to crank on MsValkyrie. Really glad I discovered that rotate image trick.

Color. Kinda monochrome.

I really like the guy in the first page, upper left hand corner with the big body and pterodactyl-type head! Good to know that you are busy with money-making art assignments. I look forward to seeing your new pages for Ms. Valkyrie.

It's good that you're busy! I too look forward to the results!

Elz, these are so funny. You already know how your spontaneous sketchery bewitches everyone here in T.A.G.land, but it never hurts to say it again. I see these and think we need a collection of YOUR observational sketches bound into a collection, รก la "Brushpen Breakfast." But what to call it...???

So glad to hear you're getting work! Does that mean the Portland move is more or less on??

(sorry I've been absent--lots of running around and procrastinating--promise to change that)

I want to go back to San Diego after all the recent media attention on the Con.
A condo in Little Italy would be best.
But I plan on dying in OKC.
Thanks for the comments Marty Rick and Tom.
Dig your most recent post Marty.

That comment INCUBUS. I watched it on youtube with ROKU 3 so I could watch it on TV. Incubus- Esperanto-Shatner!
I think Beata would like it.

W-O-W-!!

These illustrations are looking SO. DANG. GOOD.

I am so glad you are finding a way to work with color that works with your style...It looks really, really slick.

Great stuff!!

Really like how the doll and toys card came out after coloring. Top-notch Ellis Goodson art! It reminds me of the work of a children's book illustrator named Don Daily. Pencils with watercolor on top. Check out some of his work: https://www.google.com.au/search?q=Don+Daily&lr=&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAWoVChMI4M2CuMb3xgIVxZMNCh0XCQfU&biw=1288&bih=1083#imgrc=_

Thanks guys. That Don Daily is pretty awesome Tom. Very warm palettes.
Trying to do slick work Marty. The guy replied to each attachment. He's happy. I'll probably be doing more. I'll make a big blog portfolio page of the better ones if I do enough.

I was perusing Don Daily's work just now and one article said that he died in 2002 at the age of 62 from cancer. How depressing. So young, just like us Ellis. No new work from him ever again.

Another good children's book illustrator along these same lines is Charles Santore. From his Wikipedia entry it looks like he is still alive:

62 in....2 months Tom.

That Santore is also incredible. To be honest though, that is not my natural path. These artists you give as examples are the kind of people that don't want to relinquish the work. They're always making things better. I'm more a first pass, half assed second pass- I'm done= kind of guy. Just temperament. Any work I do that catches a wave will be closely related to the kind of look I get when I doodle. Because that is what I am willing to do. My work gets more and more lifeless the longer I spend on it.

I agree that your more spontaneous drawings are your best ones. That's why I like the fact that you haven't inked these cards. With this latest work you seem to have hit a somewhat more finished look while still retaining the spontaneity of the sketch.
