Just one "hard" panel to go.

One more panel with horses and extra details and characters, then it's all drama and mid shots and easy stuff.
I'll do the last hard panel now.
 Corben's Beast of Wolfton
Big influence on my idea. Totally different story.
Corben's is a Beauty and The Beast retelling with a cynical twist.
But it has a lot of ideas and period detail that really influenced my story.

Got all the hard blocking done of the other panel. This will be done today.

Have to change the stance on the lion-guy. Too static, uninteresting. Been looking at Bisley, Frazetta. Charging up.

I remember Corben. He was great. Such a raw and unique way of drawing. But Corben without color was not interesting to me.

Dude!! This is so cool!

Tom: so harsh on Corben!! I don't know much of his art, but all I've seen is b&w...which makes me say, ouch! (the panel Ellis posted here, fer instance, looks tasty, don't it??)

Corben was a artist making low budget film shockers in comic book form. I think he is a great shot maker. Cropping and cramming sometimes but always with an effect in mind.
Quietly working out of Kansas and never doing cons and self promotion. With a little bit of personal flash he could have been a much bigger deal.

Oh yeah, you're right Marty. It's just that after you've seen Corben in color you get spoiled.

"Corben's technique introduced the airbrush to comics. His sophisticated knowledge of how color is printed allowed him to get fantastic results."

—Harvey Kurtzman

Did I ever tell you I visited Corben in Kansas. Went there with my co-worker-friend Mike Wheeler. We both worked doing yellow page ads for Cliff Hansen studios.

Just called Corben up and asked if we could come by.I liked his art.

This would have been 1979 maybe. It could be checked as it was right before DEN first appeared in Metal Hurlant, the French magazine that was transformed into Heavy Metal.

Any way. His basement studio/garage walls were covered with his gray tone paintings of Den. Great modeling and texture. What he used for the color was making his own, hand crafted color separations of that gary art into different levels of hold using overlays and hand painted rubylith to give him his four color plates. No one could do that today. Lacy lucy camera that set on it's nose, came up about chest height.. Big plate of glass on the back.

Ellis, you've been to Kirby's studio too, right? How many other famous artists have you visited in your life? I don't think I've visited anybody.

Ellis: HA!

It's true, I did visit Friz.

He didn't think too much of me....

Tom Moon said...

Why do you say that Marty?

Davis Chino said...

Remember, he tried to swat me!

Did I ever show you guys the video footage of the Watts school guys and me being led around the museum by Friz?? I really should digitize that...got some funny stuff.

Tom Moon said...

I don't remember the swatting story.
