Working with video reference

Decided this was so technical and long-winded, it belonged on a technical and long-winded blog. So I made one. :)

Working With Video Reference

It's a better place to put this kind of stuff. I'll link to my little articles as I write them, that way I don't derail this space with dry technical stuff.

Progress

Sooner Con. I did the two lower panels from- 1pm to about 4 pm. Jack Kirby could have done an issue of The Howlling Commandos in the same amount of time.
Talked to artist Mark Texeira for a short time. Showed him how to do animated GIFs in Photoshop.
He was wildly appreciative of the new knowledge.
Gave me his cell number and his email and a signed bookmark.
I'm OK in Mark's book.

Giant Robot Outake:

This was the original fake sequel page at the end of the story, (adapted after Rick's suggestion).  When I decided to write a real sequel, it got swapped out for the deep-sea diver page.

To Celebrate Tom's Cosmic Triumph

Had to post something to honor Tom's incredible book. As a point of encouragement, Stuart Ng ordered 10 "Brushpen Breakfast" books. We came up with a scheme to put a drawing into each one and sell them for $20 with the qualifier, "Signed with Drawing!"

So I sat at a pizza place in El Segundo and did some brushpens of passers-by.

(We've been on the road so I've been too out of touch. I'll get back on it when I get home next week)

Kirby. The Prisoner. Large size Pencils

As soon as the video processes, I'll make an unlisted video of my new job.

E3 Blast From The Past

E3 running this last week reminded me of the days when I was excited enough about the games industry to go to the convention.  That's us Rick, back in the BlueSky days.

PLEASE don't make me beg . . .

I've heard from a couple of NON-TAGsters, but Ellis is the only TAGster who has given me feedback about this year's Artist Alley at SDCF.  And he won't even BE there, probably!  :(
... although hope springs eternal.

I cannot give you guys what you want, unless I know what it is that you want.  Registrations are already active, but AA plans are at a complete standstill.  YOU can change that by replying to the e-mail I sent out last week.  I'm begging y--
Oh, dammit ...

I start at AVIS tomorrow morning

I'll let you know how my carshuttling job goes.
This is a sample I've been invited to do for Marvel Comics.
Since they'll not see it as pencils on paper, I'll do some revision in photoshop that it needs.
Like that Gun needing to be lowered into the panel a bit.
Needs some cursory backgrounds.
You may remember the other partial page. I'll try and finish that by Tuesday.

SD Comic Fest ...

BIG NEWS
coming
shortly
to your
e-mail
folders!

Stay tuned! . . . or should that be 'tooned?

Speaking of Cons

The article I've linked to is about OKC local Horror Host.
Count Gregore.
Hope I can attend that ceremony.
I'll be a working man on Monday. It may put quite a crimp on when I do what.
But since everyone that employs these days is dodging hiring full time and health care taxation,
I'll have only 25 hours that they'll use me in a week.
Odds are parts of the weekend will open up.

Raymond and the Giant Robot Attack: Pages 17-32 of 64

To Be Continued Next Week...

Sorry about the long post again.  Will happen only twice more.  But I've realized that long posts don't push other people's stuff off the page.  Blogger always keeps the last seven entries up. (Which I've also discovered is adjustable in the Layout Preferences, should the need arise.)

This looks pretty cool! I will never cease to be amazed at what is possible with animation.

Double-Bounce Walk

Working through the 'Animator's Survival Kit' and thought I needed to do a double-bounce. Fun little jaunty walk.

Well, just got the word today

After almost one year of employment, The place I currently work put out notice that we are SOL at August end at the latest. We've had lots of departures in the last 8 months and no new hires. My current boss who I worked for left last week for a new assignment and kind of left the rest of us in the lurch. I anticipate they will start cutting us loose starting next month as most of the operation has been transferred to the east coast already. Kind of sad really after getting back to work only to get the shaft again. I've saved some money and I can keep afloat for awhile but I guess it's time to do something for myself now and move forward.

Roughs, Actual Size, Finish Pencils Tomorrow

Just happened to get this wrecked truck on Tumblr the day I needed it for ref.
Those Russian Dash Cams really catch the mayhem.
Made Notes on the rough. To make changes to sizes and poses.
Did them in photoshop to make sure they did improve the drawings.

What was the name of the Japanese Toy Armature that Ranjo owned?

Great idea. Ranjo had a very nice toy that was as pose-able as this thing. White and blue.

Raymond and the Giant Robot Attack: Pages 1-16 of 64

Finally finished it.  Here's the first 25%.

Guess it's a little deceptive to call this a sixty-four page story when there are so few panels per page.

Marty, I'm sorry but I decided not to hand-letter my word balloons.  I considered your suggestion very seriously, and tried an experiment or two. I love the word balloons in your comics.  They have such personality and are just right for the work you are doing, but in the end I couldn't tap into my own inner Artie Simek.  Maybe next time.

So "Raymond and the Giant Robot Attack" represents the most I could do in six months of spare time, mornings and weekends. The thing I'm happiest about is that I could follow through, finish the project, and have a good time doing it.  It's another step in the development of my own peculiar aesthetic.  Having fully accepted that I will never be Frazetta or Kirby frees me to do as I please.
