Comic-Con Meet?

Comic-Con International 2006
Thursday, July 20 - Sunday, July 23

Every year TAG tries to get together and have a lunch or dinner or something. I wanted to get an idea of who is interested in doing this and maybe some suggestion of where to eat. Our Boston correspondent Rick will be making a cross country trek just for the Con and this also would be a good opportunity to meet the new guys. In the past we've usually gone to the Old Spaghetti Factory but it's not there anymore. So who is interested??

Marty are you coming or what???

Another thought: Maybe we can make a special trip out to OB to see Shel. Krayonzilla any thoughts???

Yet another thought: What day would be better? Friday dinner? Saturday lunch? Saturday dinner? Saturday late-night snack...?

I'm in and any day or time will be fine w/ me. The old Spagetti Factory is gone, sad to say. Need a new cheap / big table place I guess. There's a Boca di Beppi not too far...

I'm also in any day any time. Just need to know a little in advance if I need to take a Thursday or Friday off from work.

Boca di Beppo sucks. Had a company Christmas gig there once. Food was awful. Really a bummer Pat and Oscars is gone too. I'm sure there is something else in the neighborhood, just need to find it.
Everybody needs to decied on a day and time well in advance. It always turns into a cluster-f when it's last minute.

We ought to picnic out by that harbor house restaurant park thrust out in the bay by the Marina. Right behind the convention center. Put somebody in charge of bringing in the KFC or the Pizza and just hang out and gab. I'll bring a hackey sack although I'm too arthritic to kick it any more.

Picnic on the grass? Bring your knee pads and mouthguard too Ellis.

I'm in. Restaurant, grass, it's okay with me. I'm planning on vacationing the end of the week to attend many sessions, etc. So any day is fine with me.

Um ... I'm not sure what Tom's cautionary comment means. Maybe I need to get out more, or avoid getting out more ... or something ...

Tom Moon said...

Ha ha! Give Ellis a nice patch of grass and he will want to rassle with someone. It's in his blood.

Skribbl said...

Oh....THAT'S what you mean....wrasslin'. Ellis always told me it was just the Okie way of saying hello.

I usually take Thursday and Friday off just for the con. Saturday I have the little kiddies with me. So Friday or Thursday would be gooder. It also depends on what seminars people are attending. Uh but you don't get the schedule for those until the day of right???

BTW Bucca is good. Have you tried the Macaroni Rosa? Dee-Lish-Us!

A casual thing would be fun. We could Sqwoob it for old times' sake. If we do that I will bring a sturdy saddle, a tuning fork in the key of E AND my knee pads.

Name it and I'll be there! I think a lunch thing would be better so I can still hang out with the family in the evenings.

I'm starting to get stoked!

Schmitzy! You coming out from "BAST'N"? It will be good to see you again.

As for "Elly Mae" Goodson. wrasslin' on the grass is second nature to him. He can come to the BIG city but he brings the hillbilly with him, or is it the trailer park? Hell it's all the same.

Mr Goodson said...

Tom Moon, I'd wrestle you but there would be inevitable videotaping. I don't know if I'm ready to go viral and replace Star Wars kid as the biggest global goofus. Wait a second, there might be money in that.

Hey! I think I'm going to be in San Diego too! I'm staying with my Mom, so she's not lonely while my sis goes to Hawaii for a week, (my father died in Feb) but I'm sure I could get out for the Con one day.

By the way, if anyone was wondering why I was gone, I had a bad Feb/March. Besides my father losing his battle with cancer, I was in the hospital for 8 days myself with acute pancreatitis. When I got home it was another four weeks before I could get off the couch. Then, deadline crunch from being away from my studio for so long.

Mr Goodson said...

Maurie. Sorry about all the hardship. All that is awful. I hope your own health is back.I just thought you weren't going to post until Scott did. It would be greta to see you at the Con

MJM said...

I beat Scott?!

Skribbl said...

Hey Maurie I'm sorry about your Dad.

Glad you beat that acute pancreatitis and able to join us here again. BTW are you up in the Bay Area?? The last time I talked to you that seemed to be the plan.

Tom Moon said...

Good to hear from you again MJM. I was afraid you had dropped out for good. Also sorry to hear about all you've had to go through. I would look forward to meeting you at the TAG get-together.

Where are you in the bay area? I grew up in San Mateo and Berkeley/Oakland.

Dok said...

I'd also like to send my sympathies to you Maurie.

Hope that you're feeling better soon, inside and out.

MJM said...

Thanks for the nice words and condolences guys. Yes, I'm in BERKELEY now. My son was just accepted into Cal at the Architecture program there. Yep, another artist in the family!

Tom, I'm within walking distance of Pixar, but even closer to Acme Bakery and the Scharffenberg Chocolate factory :) And hey, I have GOT to talk to you about PvP on EQ2, lol!

Regarding restaurants -- you all been to Filippis in Little Italy on India Street? Yum!

rickart said...

Filippis isn't within walking distance on the con center but I'm always up for Filippis!

Really, anyplace is good with me as long as I see my buds. Denny's would be very apropiate and i think I know where it is.... by Laurel street?

I'll add my thoughts and prayers for you and your family, MJM! glat to hear you are on the mend and about an architect in the family!

This is going to be great!

Skribbl said...

Hey Maurie I didn't know you were near Pixar!!! I was staying at the Mariott Courtyard on Shellmound! I could have hooked up with you!! BTW I tried to get together with Sergio but it fell through at the last moment. I think the next time I'm up in the Bay Area (June/July?) I'll contact you. We could grab Sergio and get a party going.

And thanks for the restauraunt suggestions guys. They're good ones. Denny's is a classic. And Filippi's is good too. How about El Indio's??? Still taking suggestions. Anybody else want to chime in??

MJM said...

DEFINITELY let me know next time you come up here, Jeff. (It would be great to see Sergio too.) You know Diane and family are in San Jose? They're planning to move back down to the Irvine area sometime this summer.

Tom Moon said...

PvP on SOE's MMORPG EQ2 MJM?

I actually don't know too much about it. I don't really play the game anymore, and I've never played on a PvP server, but what's up? Do you play? Or does your son?

On where to eat, within walking distance of the Con is probably my priority. If we get in the doors by, what, 10:00(?) we would want someplace close by the time 12:00 or 1:00 rolls around, yes? The picnic idea sounds good still.

Krayonzilla said...

Filippis is good. Had lunch there last week. I work down in Little Italy. Plenty of places to eat. Memos is good too if your into sub sandwiches. We can take the trolly too.

Skribbl said...

I'm thinking that we should either:

A) have a lunch deal. And if we do that it should be close so you don't lose valuable Con time.

or

B) have a dinner where we can sit down and have a chat and maybe wrassle a bit.

This will determine our dining choice. Any thoughts or worries? I know Rick wanted to have a lunch but I kinda want to have a dinner. Anybody else have a preference??

Skribbl said...

Hey Maurie,

I will give you a call the next time we're up. And I didn't know that Diane was in San Jose. I thought that you guys were going to move next door to each other as you always have! Why is she going to move to Irvine???

MJM said...

Hey Jeff, John quit his fulltime job and went contract, so He and Diane can live anywhere. Irvine because it's close to his family. It will be weird to live a day's drive away from Diane after all these years living close. But who knows, I may be down in San Diego again as soon as my son can afford to live on his own and I can cut the cord.

Hello fellas! The feckless faux frenchie is back on line, sorry for the extended absence, and thanks for not forgetting me.

I am with SKRIBBL on the dinner preference because a daytime sortie leaves everyone with so little time to confab and fraternize, and so much sweaty-back stress getting to and fro' the Convention Hall. I'm only going to the Con to see you guys! It's the first year I won't have to be at the Watts' booth.

I can say from experience that Buca di Bep is crazy at CON time, and tho' the fare was poor on my first visit, it has improved. Rock Bottom sounds better to me...and for the adventurous, may I suggest a good FRENCH restaurant just across the street from it (cue french laughter).

Or Hooters.

I really like the dinner idea. And if it's dinner, we'll have a lot less restrictions on time/place; we could all board the trolley and get to Little Italy very easily, and thereby make the Fillipi's fantasy a reality.

Besides, if we can't do dinner as a group, I'll just have to hound each one of you individually and in pairs, and think how annoying that will be.

Davis Chino said...

Also: maybe THURS would be good for dinner--we'll all be fresh. But I am available whenever. It's up to you guys.

Agree that dinner would be more relaxed if it works for everyone else. Thursday night sounds easier than a Friday night.

Rock Bottom, French place across the street or Flippi's all works for me.

I know that w/ Flippi's we can make a reservation to avoid waiting for a big table.

I'm assuming that the same is true for the other spots.
