Not Giving Up...

...on trying to contribute to this blog.

Bought that McGinnis book, "The Art of Robert E. McGinnis" and it's good, but after flipping thru the entire thing I wound up liking him less than before I picked it up. His best stuff is great, but the cumulative effect was to show up the weaker, more pro-forma work.

His best stuff has such a fresh look, with interesting textures. His later, more over-rendered stuff, loses a lot of that. But I love his girls. He nails that 60's/early 70's Playmate type of body.

So I copied some and then did my own doodles in his vein (sorta)....

p.s. I did shrink the head on that top brush pen sketch...SO SUE ME!!

Super work and when I say inspiring I mean it. Caused me to think of a friend who gets a common critique to work on his rendering. Nothing better for rendering revelations than taking a painting and turn it into line art as you've done beautifully. What is light, heavy, lost and what convention is used for shadow area. So I told this guy to do just this. Take a real painting, not a colored drawing, and turn it into rendered line art.

Thanks for the nice comments. I agree with your advice--it IS a good challenge to transfer a painting into a drawing. And I still find it very difficult!! This one came out OK, but many don't....

Dude, I love "Coin Toss"!! I was going to comment but since it's fallen a it down the page I think i need to do a full-on appreciation in a new post. LOVE the idea you and Tom have been spitballing of splicing ion old movie footage. Very reminiscent of the old Pixel Vision movies with Ron Thompson....chin puppet, anyone?

I love film editing. I'm good at killing by darlings. I edit shots down to nothing if I can. Real actors would hate me. Photoshop video is a hoot. If you get that current cc version, it's a lot of fun. Combined with what you can do with youtube, everyone is Cecil B DeMille now.

Is your address still the one in Irvine.?

Sorry for the late comment Marty. We just got back from our Mount Rainier vacation. Fantastic drawings as usual!
