Trying To Print a Sketchbook....

...hoping to sell some at the Emerald City Comic Con-vention.

In desperation I re-rented "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?" and sketched thusly.

Awesome. I have to rewatch that movie. Victor Buono. That's an awesome Joan Crawford. Bette Davis is good but Crawford goes nicely over the top. Hope you manage a sketchbook for the show. You have plenty of time. Got your Lulu expert in Rick. I can also tell you anything I know about the process. Nothing to it really.

The dead bird is awesome.
And tasty looking.
Norwegian Blue I believe.

Ha!

I can't wait to buy me a copy of that sketchbook!

How many pages is your book going to be Marty?

Thanks dudes!

Tommy, book will be about 70 pages, I think. I am working with a nearby print shop on this...the original idea was to reproduce the look of one of my spiral-bound cardboard Muji sketchbooks, but I'm hitting some difficulties. With luck I'll be able to get something decent--and affordable! (shooting for $12 bucks a copy).

Sounds like a deal!

Did the knock down of your line work in the lulu print job put you off the idea of using them?
It is always best to get film, contact on an inked plate, for a line drawing.
But, on short notice you could do a lulu job and have the prep work done for a later, good offset print job.
The offset print job will probably demand a minimum print run and I know from experience that those over runs have a way of overstaying their welcome.

Does Lulu offer printing at a higher dpi? The TAG book was 125 dpi, right?

MrGoodson2 said...

I think Lulu will print at least 300 dpi. I looked it up. That's typically called for in the example files they show on the faq page lulu faq page

MrGoodson2 said...

The main DPI note from the PDF creation of the FAQ "If your image DPI is greater than 300, downsample to 300 DPI."

MrGoodson2 said...

But, the whole PDF shouldn't be larger than 700 meg. So less dpi might be forced on a book to make it less than that 700 meg

Hey, I see peoples still commenting here!

I am not using Lulu for this--no knock on them, but I want to work with a local printer first and see what kind of results I can get. Yes, I was unhappy with the saturation of my blacks with Lulu but that's really a problem on my end, as I understand it.

Just gonna print up 100 and see what the response is. Hopefully won't just sit in a box in the garage.

Marty. I just saw Hitchcock's The Wrong Man for the first time. Interesting and very involving movie. Thought of you since we saw the Anthony Hopkin's Hitchcock together. Lot of the Hitchcock love of Vera Miles on display in TWM. Watch it and do some great sketches as you watch.

I want one too.

El! OK, I'll check it out. Of course you and Tom get a book--assuming I can get them printed in time.

Speaking of Hitchcock titles, just watched Bill Murray's "The Man WEho Knew Too Little," and I gotta say, I was in hysterics. Think it got panned at the time (late 90's?), but damn, I thought it held up well.
