I've been at my wit's end trying to get this sketchbook completed--and printed!--in time for the big show. Looks like I'll have 50 or so to carry up to Emerald City, so that is a big relief.
Here's the cover. It will be spiral bound. Trying to get the look of my Japanese sketchbooks.
Because the book makes much mention of the lately moribund Brushpen Breakfast Blog, I am in the process of furiously back-dating posts. Don't want any blessed Brushpen book-buyer to go to the trouble of entering the link and finding something that ended in September of 2012...does this make me evil?
You can check in on my temporal cheating and laugh. Either way, I'm sure I will have to pay for it in my online afterlife.

That is one excellent Blog. Not cheating at all.
The sketchbook looks like a must have item. But hope you sell all 50. I'll get 2nd editions.
Sold. Hold one out for me, please, Mr. Davis!
I want one too! Looking forward to it!
I want one too Marty!
Dudes! So glad y'all are interested. I shall earmark copies for each of you.
Might even discount 'em to cost for ye....
On a more serious note (and deserving of its own post), I have not been able to make contact with Ron Thompson for the last few months. Emails bounced, phone turned off, and now completely non-existent as a phone number.
Anyone know anything?
I want one too. Coming to your table with a fistful of dollars.
One day, I might want to print something up. Is there a website for the printer you used, along with a price list?
Check your FB messages Marty.
to contact Ron
Tommy!
No, they quote individually. My job was pretty custom as I wanted it bound to look just like a real Muji sketchbook (creating the illusion that I'd drawn in it fer reals--get it??)[which, BTW, was my big idée fixe for this project (an' yeah, yeah--I know Stephen Silver already did it with his--sue me), tho' I dunno how much it'll resonate with the public--but I love my cool Japanese-styled stickers I had printed special--it's that last bit of veritée!]. For 100 books it's about $10 a book cost...for 250 it drops to less than $7.
It'll be a long haul to make a million on these, I guess. But i dig 'em! And I think you guys will, too.
@JMG--thank you, brother!
The book looks great, sir. I'm looking forward to seeing it on Thursday!
What are you planning on selling if for?
Tom, you might want to take a look at Kablamm for your comic printing needs.
Thanks, Rick!
Not sure on price. Originally thought $12, to be competitive with other sketchbooks--but of course if I'm plunkin' a custom drawing inside, have to be a few dollars extra for that, right? But the people I've shown images to say at least $20!
Maybe I'll try $16?...with a drawing?
Charge 25 bucks for it at least. I've paid that for wimpy little volumes straight from Kinkos. Heck, charge 30.
No one is holding a gun to their heads
I was just talking with a friend who has been to the con before and he was charging $15 per sketch book for a pretty basic sketchbook. He would do a free sketch in it, but only if a person asked, and seems to be happy with how they sold.
Marty's books sounds like a nicer print job, so I suspect he could ask for $20.
--And I got the books!!!
Just putting spray fix on the covers now to keep them from getting greasy/grimey.
Chipmunks are go!
Emerald City Comic-Con is here! Rick, Marty and Ronnie - Joe Shoopack, Maria DelCasino, Rick Randolph and Rich Sjoberg say hi!
I can feel the energy!
I'm going to dive in and ask about dinner. Is there a particular day, venue and time that works for everybody? I'm pretty flexible.
Yes, it's looking like Sunday night is good for all. The con ends at 5:00, but that doesn't mean we can't pack up earlier than that. I'll see Marty in a couple of hours and Tom is arriving sometime today as well.
Do you have a place to recommend? Icon Grill or 13 Coins are always safe picks, but I might be up for someplace else.
I'm fine with either place, Rick, or another joint if someone thinks of it. Sunday afternoon/evening works great for me.
Sounds like fun.
Dang I'm bummed out. Emerald City Comic-Con is the happening place now. SDCC is SO been there...done that. Anybody doing Wonder Con in March?
Yep, I think ECCC is the place to be. Arrived this afternoon and walked around Seattle. Picked up my badge at the Convention Center - no lines, no hassle. Just walked right in and up to the booth. They even gave my wife a pass - hadn't even asked for one, and everyone was so friendly and laid back. Ate lunch at Boom Noodle. Now in our room at the Mayflower. Nice hotel, great room. Gonna take a little nap now maybe.

Take pictures of how great it is. Otherwise, it's just a story.
Just read Skottie Young saying he'd never signed so many books. I assume you guys had a pretty good day.
Day one was great! We didn't move a ton of merchandise, but we brought in about $100. All my friends who have had a table there before say that today is going to be the crazy one, so I'm hoping we get a lot of business today. Met loads of nice folks... Marty is the best tablemate you can have because he's so personable and approachable.
It was great--equal parts intimidating and invigorating. Rick steadies me. It would help if we were drawing recognizable licenses!
Everyone should come to this Con!
I'll be there next time. My 60 year old man Con. I want to see for myself.
