I Spotted a Ranjo Credit
Mixed reception among the animation department to the new Meet The Robinsons. Marty organized the research trip. I'd be interested in Ranjo's critique. I found it unqualified magic. I 've never seen better 3d for one thing. I wish i'd seen Chicken Little at the theatre now.
So Skrbbl. The credit went by and Marty thought it was a story art credit. I'm not sure but I'm fairly sure it wasn't story. What was your credit?

I remember the day that Rick Schmitz, Brad Constantine, and I were pitching animation studios and we met Jeff for lunch and a tour at Disney and Meet The Robinsons sketches were all over the walls ... very cool stuff. I saw the movie with my kids over the weekend (not knowing what to expect (having liked the trailer, but that doesn't always mean much)) and I thought it was a great effort. I loved the bowler hat DOR-15 (Doris) because of how visual he/she was ... and thought that the Bowler Hat Man was animated with great gusto. Really, I'd see it again, and isn't THAT the testiment to any film's overall quality and/or relevance?
Boy ... I hope some others of you agree ... ;-)
Thanks for the goodness. It's nice to hear since I was savaged this afternoon in a roomfull of story and vis dev people here at Sony. We were waiting for the meeting to start and the art director said that he puts the film somewhere between Sharktale and Madagascar in terms of viewability. Then everyone in the room piled on and at the end they said,"oh but not to say that Ranjo's work was bad!" I really don't care what people say because everyone is entitled to their own opinion and they have their own preferences. BTW I have my own problems with certain parts of the film but the guys that worked on it had a long and hard fight to the release date. If anybody has any critiques of the film please share them because they won't make me cry. Really I promise!
oh and my credits were in vis dev and story.
And I will post a critique when I get more time. Maybe later tonight???
Ah, cred-itS , plural. I saw the viz dev and Marty saw the story. Together we make one alert person.
I loved it Jeff. The main criticism i've heard from the others is the "get to know the Robinson" montage moment. Too much eccentricity all at once for them. It never occured to me as i was watching it that I was getting too much.
I haven't seen it yet so I can't tell you if I like it. But I can tell you I like bunnies and noodles. Bunnies are warm and furry and noodles are just funny.
The movers come on Friday and I'll be going down officially on Sunday. They're putting me up in a Residence Inn for two weeks that is literally 400 feet from Rockstar San Diego. Tom, it's the one on the corner of Farraday and Aviara. Just stay the hell away from my car is all I ask.
Bunnycake - So do you have time for a last blast with the LA TAGsters or what?
Heh heh ... I can imagine dishing up a heaping helping of noodles and bunnies for your "car" ... bunnies on leashes, of course. ;-)
So Skrib, how much of what you worked on survived the final cut?
Oh, and for the record, that day of doing pitches with Tom and Brad was a blast! What a great day that was... right around 3 years ago, I beleive.
Rick - Hmmm... what stayed... The design for Doris including her endoskeleton. I boarded the section where the Bowler Hat Guy first brings in the Matter Scanner into Inventco. The Matter Scanner... uh, well in the beginning I was acting production designer so I was working with the vis dev guys developing the whole world. The orphanage, the auditorium, the Robinson's house in the future...I had a real blast working with Kevin Nelson on the time machines. He's a graduate of Art Center and he did alot of auto rendered time machines with interiors that looked so markeriffic! I did come up with the off-centered ship idea. Just alot of background stuff. Oh and the Bowler Hat Guy I had a little influence on. Just get the Art of Meet the Robinsons and have a peek!
Last Blast....3 and a half hours of GRINDHOUSE, or TMNT. A guy at work is raving about TMNT. Or no movie at all. Dinner at a good place that's not too noisey.
Jeff, I mean to buy that book. It was unanimous that everyone dug the designs. Especially those asymmetrical time machines. Did you have a big hand in the Dystopia of the bowler hat future? That was the show stopper. Buncake is spitting green bile right now realizing he has lurched into a spoiler.
I haven't seen it yet, either, but with the kids on the way to the west coast for spring break, perhaps it's time to take them to the movies!
And now I need to take a trip to Barnes and Noble to see the book...
Got the book... yer all over that thing! Nice work! There was even a gauche robot drawing, just like the ones you have posted on Robotopia!
Now I want the art book too! I didn't know you were involved in that project Jeff. Because of that, I want to see the movie now. The children's book that it was based on is one of my favorites, but I've been wondering how one would make it into a full-length movie. Well, regardless of what the critics or the public eventually say about the film, congratulations on the release.
Alas Scott is too busy for a last blast. I would like to see Grindhouse. We should see it in memorium anyway. I spoke to him and he stated that "vucanized rubber is more important than you." That's why I love Scott. We share the same sentiments.
Thanks for buying the book Rick! *blushes*
Tom M. - yeah the movie has a little of the book in it but the plot is all new stuff. Originally the president of Feature Animation wanted to copy the book exactly but if you really look at the designs, Lewis and Wilbur look like tiny 40 year old men! Not very appealing to kids. BTW try to see the 3-D version if you get a chance.
Ellis - The dystopian future was always going to be the opposite of the perfect future but I left before they started deveoping the exact look. I think they did a good job and saved alot of modeling time by using the atmosphere to obscure the details.
Tom C. - i forgot that you guys came up when MTR was in production. It was fun to show you guys around. The invitatioin is still open if you want to come to Sony. Also, you shouldn't give up on pitches to the studios. I know it's alot of work but you never know....
