I didn't see the rifle at first, I just read it as some sort of swing or trapeze. I thought of the bat in Anastasia. What do you think if the background items were inked with rulers and inking templates and such? Would the living things pop more?
Ben, I can't use tools to ink. It has to be freehand. Which is weird since my favorite job was doing Yellow Pages art when I graduated college. Always did art with templates. I do the occasional straight line with a ruler. The Pop is a factor. It needs to be a contrast decision.
I also used technical pens, kohinoor and some other brand. Mars? maybe. That was my template using days. I used to move from place to place with a ton of plastic templates. All these great ellipse templates- all sizes. French curves. I forget when I got rid of them.
The alien script on the ice planet was done on the whiteboard. I first wrote a jumble of "damn dirty ape"- thickened parts, erased parts. Ended up with the glyph.

That's a really nice little painting Ellis!
Thanks Tom. I forgot the imp needed a rifle. So that was a later add on. Doesn't gel as well as it could if it was part of the original sketch.

I have to completely revise the ape piece. He didn't go for my creative re imagining of a ziggarut. He wants a ziggarut.
