Boy, does Wolverine ever look lame in that first appearance. Amazing how far he's come as a character.

I love Herb Trimpe's run on the Hulk throughout the 70's. They were coming out each month with a lot of crazy characters for the Hulk to battle. Wolverine was no exception. Who would have figured that 8 months later Giant Size X-Men 1 would hit and the Wolverine would go on to become the #2 in the Marvel Universe.

Tom, looks like that first design just fell short...by a whisker.

BTW, how many TAGsters own original comic book art??

I have none--bar the usual mini-sketches from artists. I do have some original animation cels and drawings, and I love 'em!

Looked at a beautiful Daniel Clowes page at last year's WonderCon, but they wanted $20,000 or something.

OOF!

Marty, all those comics are long gone. This initial design was by John Romita Sr. When GS X-Men 1 was being worked on. Gil Kane did the cover and did Wolverine's mask wrong. Dave Cockrum took that cover and did the insides based on that. So that's how Wolverine's mask was accidentally changed, and stuck ever since. I have one page by Don Newton from the DC Anthology Time Warp and I think another. I posted them awhile back

I don't own any.

I have no original pages. Monte, the other artist on our team at WT, is buying one of Mike Christian's pages that he did for ST:TNG. He wants it because of the story behind Ryker needed to be redone as a thinner man.

This version of Wolverine: Meow!

I like how his claws seem to originate from somewhere back on the wrist.
Definitely off model.
He should fight the early woody woodpecker
