Years ago I watched "The Strange Loves of Martha Ivers" and came away with the (not-very-original) idea Van Heflin should have been playing the marmish D.A., and Kirk Douglas should have been the free-wheelin' tough-guy gambler. But I watched it again last week and have to say I was wrong. It's maybe Heflin's best role as a leading man. You'll be amazed to see Douglas looking sooo young.
This doesn't really capture the luggish, lumpen Van Heflin that is forever imprinted on my heart...but it'll have to do.
BONUS UPDATE: I'll make like Ellis and keep adding images to the same post.....

I've put it at the top of my netflix queue. May end up being my last mailer before my netflix plan converts to streaming only. I'll miss the mailers. Not every thing is streaming. It will be eventually.
ReplyDeleteLove the drawing. Concept of him being a foursquare character very intensely done. I also checked out your very younf Kirk on Brushpen
brush pen-Kirk at the Top
Heh heh heh. That made me laugh.
ReplyDeleteFor me the iconic Van Heflin is walking through the swinging bar doors with an axe handle, saving Shane's ass.
ReplyDeleteNo one does caricatures like Marty!

ReplyDeleteYou got the forehead right ... !!!
ReplyDeleteActually, speaking of foreheads and distinctive, deep eyes, how about a caricature of Patrick McGoohan.
ReplyDeleteThanks guys!
ReplyDeleteThis does look like a fat McGoohan....
El, I'll have to check out that apt. link.
Nice additions. I like the rhythm on the head at the top. I've got to see this movie.
ReplyDeleteOn the top caricature, if you put James Cagney's mouth on Patrick McGoohan's face, you'd have this drawing. I can't help but imagine this guy going, "You killed my brothah, so not I'm gonna kill you!"
