Real Project; (Some) Real Money to Help Pitch It ...

Hi, all.

This posting is to try and find a colorist. The group I'm working with is turning four novels into graphic novels. The character involved is iconic and has a following in the world at large. More than that I cannot say. We met as a group, me, Tim Vigil, Johnny B. Gerardy, and the author of the books at the Long Beach Comic Con last week. Went EXTREMELY well. The author is going to take this pitch into the 3rd largest comic book publisher himself, and it doesn't get any better than that. Anyway, I need a colorist to do the pitch samples: four concepts and one page of sequential art, all inked.

Anyone who wants to step up and try your color work out, here is the initial character sketch, penciled by Tim Vigil, inked by Johnny B. Gerardy, and now yours to download and work on. This is an open invitation and I will pass anyone's finished piece to the other two artists involved. The one they choose will get the gig -- simple as that.

I have faith that this project will find a home and that it will be a paying gig. The pitch sample pieces will have a price attached, but I need to work that out with the person selected to participate.

Step two would be to promote it to a broad audience, which I probably won't do. I bought one for myself and that will probably be the extent of it.

Here's another image I've made on the ride to and from work with Brushes. I've got Sketchbook now, too, but I haven't done anything interesting with it yet. It's sort of clunky compared to the immediacy of Brushes. However, it does have more brushes and other features, so I will spend some more time with it.

Private Parts

PRIVATE PARTS Is the Netflix movie I watched this morning.It will be reviewed this week on AintItCool news on the Horror Movie a Day Feature. Very funny. Not as funny as Zombieland.

Added a couple of memory sketches from Private Parts. Labeled as "Spare Parts" (accidentally) This is a Psycho Thriller, not the Howard Stern Movie.

Shemp Thoughts

I'm going to do a Shemp series.
I was thinking the other day "What if I was a handsome devil like Ranjo or Davis? What doors would have opened for me that are instead firmly closed?"
I had these thoughts while watching some Shemp era Stooges. Here's Shemp with all this talent but he can realistically only be a Stooge. I've read enough about Shemp that I know he wanted to be more than a Stooge. Throwing Hollywood networking parties etc.
So the idea is to do some drawings with Shemp as Indiana Jones, Conan, James Bond etc.
Try to make them styling and finished for a change instead of my usual sketchiness.

Watching BBC Day Of The Triffids-Brad Harris-Oscar the Muppet-Maytag

Couple of these doodles came about while I watched characters on the BBC version of Day of The Triffids. Using the ROKU hardware plus netflix instant view. It's really a cool way to watch movies that are hard to find or that you'd never buy. I've seen BEAT GIRL with Oliver Reed as a young punk. Shriek of The Mutilated. Both versions of THE RAZORS EDGE. Three episodes from The AVENGERS from 1967. Warhol's HEAT. Jackie Chan Michelle Yeoh SUPERCOP.
It's the way TV ought to be. Movies and TV shows you hand pick and no commercials.

I was also surfing using some old links. Found this on shipping container architecture. The title is the link. I sketched the simplest one that I liked. It brings out the lego kid in you to think about shipping container arrangements and stackings.

Who'll Stop The Rain Frame Grabs

I was fascinated with the idea there might have been a time (1969 or 1970) when a person could go up a Canyon road around Malibu and soon arrive at hippie quonset huts.
The film is 1978 but is portraying the Viet Nam era.

The popular TV series ULTRA GALAXY: MEGA MONSTER BATTLE will hit the big screen in Japan this year with MEGA MONSTER BATTLE: ULTRA GALAXY LEGENDS – THE MOVIE (Daikaiju Batoru Urutora Ginga Densetsu THE MOVIE).

For the new movie, Tsuburaya Productions have joined with world-famous distributor Warner Brothers, with their eye on the global market. For its domestic Japanese release, the film is planned to open in December for the New Year movie season.

Ultraman first appeared on TV in 1966. In the 43 years that followed, there have been various new Ultraman characters seen in a succession of TV series and movies. Including the various shorts and animated series, this will be the 38th Ultraman production from Tsuburaya Productions.

The movie is directed by 38-year-old Koichi Sakamoto, who has worked predominantly as executive producer on the long-running American TV series POWER RANGERS.

Sakamoto visited the USA as an international student in April 1989 after graduating from high school, where he began studying English, before landing his first major part as an actor in the 1994 movie GUYVER: DARK HERO. He eventually joined the production team of MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS (1993-1996) as a stunt director, going on to fill the roles of director, action director and executive producer for many of the subsequent POWER RANGERS series.

The main antagonist in the latest movie is not a monster but an Ultraman. A new character, Ultraman Belial, is cited as being the first “villainous Ultraman” in the 43 year history of the franchise, who was locked away in the space prison by the mighty Ultraman King tens of thousands of years ago.

The story heats up when Belial breaks free from his prison, and plans to use the Giga-Battlenizer to control 100 giant monsters and conquer the galaxy, shrouding the home world of the Ultramen in a state of darkness. Set in nebula M-78 on the Star of Ultra – the home world of the Ultramen – original Ultra heroes Ultraman and Ultra Seven stand with the popular Ultraman Mebius against the devious Ultraman Belial. As the movie takes place in their homeland, the heroes are not restricted by the same 3-minute timer as they are when they visit Earth.

The Sponichi magazine revealed today that the movie will also feature 50 Ultraman characters, 18 of which were named; Ultraman, Ultra Seven, Ultraman Jack, Ultraman Ace, Ultraman Taro, Zoffy, Ultraman Mebius, Ultraman Hikari, Ultraman King, Father of Ultra, Mother of Ultra, Ultraman Leo, Astra, Ultraman 80, Yullian, Ultraman Neos, Ultra Seven 21 and Ultraman Boy.

Original actors Susume Kurobe and Kouji Moritsugu return to reprise their roles as Hayata (Ultraman) and Dan Moroboshi (Ultra Seven) respectively, facing off against an army of over 100 giant monsters!

The film will open to theatres in Japan on December 12th.

Well it's early morning and another new post. I started a new sketchbook with a better rag paper. Decided to use various prismacolor pencils to see what results I would get once scanned. I like the red but the sienna was a disaster with my crappy scanner.

Disgraced TAG Member Asks For Traffic

Beautiful TAG people, I am trying to reclaim my blogging chops. My immediate motivation is raising money for the LIVESTRONG Challenge in memory of my old friend Paul. My purpose here is not to shake anyone down for donations, ALTHOUGH THEY ARE WELCOME, my purpose is just to let you know I am back posting on Brush Pen Breakfast. I'm pulling out as many stops as I can to make the blog a fun narrative of my training (which is fascinating), with lots of funny drawings. So I promise a higher entertainment quotient than normal. Also more consistency.

Draw The Looney Tunes

The (link) title is referring to my new favorite art instructional book. It's like the temple of the 7 golden camels condensed into the best, lucid art lessons ever put on paper.

I'd compare it to Elements of Style for brevity and focus. A great book.

The doodle is a caricature of a film director and one of a boxing promoter. Try to guess which is which. I think the boxing promoter was named Art if that helps.

Quick ref of male profiles. Mainly noting how much more room there is from the nose to the ear than most artists draw when drawing without reference. A brain has to fit in the skull but people shorten and compact the roominess needed for the back of the skull.

Will Eisner's PS magazine - Digital Archive

I almost got a job on PS magazine when I first came to San Diego 25 years ago. Jeff Jonas and Steve High had just vacated positions on the magazine. They needed someone that could ape that awesome Eisner look. If you know Steve High's art, he was the best.

Anyway., this is a treasure trove of things that Eisner probably had at least as much enthusiasm for as The Spirit.

I got the link from facebook friend Terry Beatty. He works for the magazine Scary Monsters and also did the Ms Tree's comic I provided with the Scythe back up feature (provided badly)
